Introduction to English Literature/ English B's syllabus and texts and Exam layout.

First things first; Do you have the source material?

The source material is the book. Do you have it? Did you open it or did you just sniff it a bit for that new book smell?

Well if you did go you! now go download the CXC English Literature syllabus and give that a skim through. 'Cause I have not a single clue; Why do we have to read it?

If you didn't here is the link to an online copy of Ti-Jean and His Brothers:

Lets thank PDF COFFEE for allowing this to be downloaded and being such good people. Say it with me now; "THANK YOU PDFCOFFEE!"

All you have to do is click the green(as of my time using it) button that says; 'DOWNLOAD FILE" and you are set.

Now go to CXC's website and look for the syllabus pertaining to your year(as in the year when you're going to be sitting the exam)
Here is a link to their site:

Second things second;

Get the source material and look at it. Did you? I definitely didn't- but don't be like me...

The Syllabus:
I know you didn't look at it. I didn't either until CAPE started and then I noticed that the syllabus has everything from how they want the essays' to the terms and definitions that will almost certianly appear on the exam script. All we want to know is how to pass the exam right?

The Exam:
It is composed of a Paper 1, a multiple choice- worth 30%. Paper 2, a written paper-60%. Paper 3, mainly for private or out of school candidates... the p3 is a substitute for the School Based Assessment- 10%.

This paper is divided into three sections:

  1. Section A – Drama (Shakespeare and Modern Drama). This section consists of TWO Type A questions, ONE on each text.

  1. Section B – Poetry. This section consists of TWO Type B questions, one generic question allowing candidates to use two appropriate choices from the prescribed poems and one question based on two named poems from the prescribed list.

  1. Section C – Prose Fiction (EITHER West Indian novel OR other novels in English OR West Indian short story and other short stories in English). This section consists of FOUR questions: TWO Type A questions, ONE on each prescribed novel and TWO Type B questions, one generic question allowing candidates to use two appropriate choices from the prescribed short stories and one question based on two named short stories from the prescribed list.

Right now We'll deal with Section A.

*Preview of the next post:

The Author: Derek Walcott

You wanna know why we need to know about the author right? Well somehow the authour's life actually ties in with his writing and the work he creates. So the next post will involve Mr. Walcott's life and things we should know about.
